CINQUE TERRE+ DIARY
While in Italy this summer we decided to escape Florence and Milan and instead head to the beach for a week-end.
We hopped on a train to explore the magical towns of Cinque Terre: Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Monterosso, and Vernazza. We also had the absolute pleasure of discovering La Spezia, which is a significantly bigger town compared to the ones mentioned above. A beautiful port that has the air of a bigger city but keeps the small town charm intact and captures visitors with its friendly vibe. After having the best time strolling the streets of La Spezia and engaging in a wine-tasting fair, we packed our bags the next morning and went on to start discovering the five interconnected towns of Cinque Terre.
Our first stop was Riomaggiore! And getting off the train was just as we had envisioned it: the most magical scenery welcoming you to step inside what almost seems like a story-book. This was not the end of it, because every town that we visited was somehow even more picture-perfect than the previous one!
We only had a few hours of good light to take pictures, since the weather surprised us with some major rainstorms. But despite the weather conditions we were still pleased with some of the snaps taken at the town of Vernazza, which was by far our personal favorite!
The heavy storms accounted for even more exciting stories involving delayed trains and standing in the rain for what seemed like forever! Of course that didn't stop us from having our daily gelato and sitting at cute cafés to watch the rainfall contrast with the colorful architecture. Gelato in the rain is such a distinct experience! We must admit there was a certain appeal to it.
Fortunately, there was no rain when we did the hikes, so we managed to make it to the top of the cliffs and back safely (with a few stops in between to catch our breaths).
Not even the bad weather could take away the magic from these idyllic towns. Rain or shine we were enfatuated with these villages; and there was no doubt we had an unbelievable time overindulging in Italian seafood with the most breathtaking views of the Mediterranean sea.
so much love for Cinque Terre!
